Nestled in the heart of Westbury, The Horse and Groom is being lovingly reimagined as a vibrant country pub for the modern day, combining timeless charm with a fresh, welcoming atmosphere. With a focus on great food, proper drinks, and community spirit, we’re building something special, and we can’t wait to share the journey with you.
At Smith & Fields, we have always been passionate about breathing new life into rural pubs that mean something to their community, and The Horse and Groom in Westbury, Wiltshire, is one such place. Nestled on the edge of the downs, not far from the Westbury White Horse, it has long served as a meeting point for locals, walkers, cyclists and families. While nothing is set in stone, we’re currently exploring how we might reimagine The Horse and Groom as a relaxed, all-day venue, serving breakfast and coffee in the morning, hearty lunches and dinners, and great drinks in a warm, welcoming setting.
Our intentions are still in the very early stages, and above all, we want to get this right. That means listening, to the community, to the stories that make the place special, and to what’s needed locally. If we move forward, our hope is to gently restore the pub’s character, keep its soul, and create something that serves Westbury for years to come. A place that honours the area’s heritage, including its proud connection to the White Horse, and brings people together, just as The Horse and Groom always has.

Westbury is a town steeped in history, crowned by one of the most iconic landmarks in Wiltshire. the Westbury White Horse. Carved into the chalk hillside above Bratton, the great horse stands as both a symbol and a story. While the current figure dates back to the 18th century, the tradition it honours is much older, said by many to commemorate King Alfred the Great’s victory over the Danes at the Battle of Ethandun in 878 AD. Whether myth or memory, the White Horse connects us to a time when the fate of England was shaped in these very hills — and its enduring presence reminds us that history lives beneath our feet.
At Smith & Fields, we’re proud to be part of this landscape, and to play a small role in its ongoing story. The tale of King Alfred, a leader known for wisdom, resilience, and vision, resonates with our approach: rooted in tradition, but always looking forward. We believe in bringing local stories to life, not just through words but through experience — whether that’s with a pint beside a roaring fire, a meal made from ingredients grown on local farms, or simply in the warm welcome of a well-kept country pub.
The Horse and Groom sits within this rich context, a place that’s seen centuries of change, yet still holds true to the values of community and character. As we look to the future, we want to ensure that history isn’t just remembered but woven into the very fabric of what we do. From the chalk of the downs to the heart of the town, we’ re inspired by the past and excited to shape a new chapter that celebrates Westbury’s unique spirit.
